What is your greatest weakness?
I am now working on my communications skills to be a more effective presenter. I recently joined a drama club, which I find very helpful.
Sometimes I have trouble delegating tasks to others, so I’ve taken courses in time management and learned more effective delegation techniques.
I am a little shy, but I am taking an assertive communication course to improve my confidence.
There are other areas where I would like to improve including: proficiency in languages, giving feedback to colleagues, working under pressure.
Are you willing to fail?
I don’t enjoy failure, but sometimes it happens. You just have to accept that not everything you try is going to work and you need to know when to change course.
I learned this for the first time as a new project manager at ….., I was in charge of coordinating the …. . It became clear, after the project started, that the cost will overrun, so I had to turn to my Plan B to provide what we had promised.
How do you handle stress?
Pressure is important to me, I mean, good pressure, such as having many assignments or an upcoming deadline. It helps me stay motivated and productive. But there are times when too much pressure can lead to stress. However, I am skilled at balancing multiple projects and meeting deadlines, which prevents me from feeling too stressed.
Have you learnt from your mistakes?
Mistakes are great learning experiences. Of course, we try hard not to make mistakes, but I realized that sometimes we cannot avoid them. A few years ago …. From this mistake I learnt that…
What do people most often criticize about you?
People often tell me that I’m too hard on myself, I always worry that what I produce/create might not be good enough. I think that’s a fairly common mindset among business people.
What was it like working with your last supervisor?
I have been fortunate enough to have fantastic managers during my career so far. I have respected each of them and got along well with them.
Who was your best boss and who was your worst?
I’ve learned a lot about how to be a good manager from the supervisors I’ve had in the past. My favourite boss taught me to …. (i.e. lead by example, that there is no task too small for a manager to perform, etc.)…
I had a difficult start with one of my managers earlier, because we had different expectations about … Once we talked about it, we realized that our goals were compatible/not compatible, so….
Why were you fired?
My boss and I agreed that it was time for me to move on to a position that … So now I’m available and ready to work.
The job did not work out, so my manager and I thought…
My job was outsourced to …, which was unfortunate because I loved my job, and everybody said I did my job well and I always got excellent reviews from my managers.
Why do you want to leave (or have left) your current job?
I am currently employed at … and have been working for them since …. I have received great training and education there. I have been working on international job assignments and I have been the head of a … member team.
I feel that the time is right for me to try / test the skills and experience I have obtained there in a different company, and I am confident I can bring these skills to your organisation.
At the age of forty-something, would you really be willing to start at an entry-level position?
Sometimes you need to take a step backward to move your career forward. Starting in an entry-level role would allow me to learn your business from the ground up.
The career that I’ve been in is so different than yours that I would love the opportunity to start over again in your field. The salary cut will be well worth it.
